This song is about getting help recovering from addiction. The mountain is the subject of that addiction. In the first verse, it seems insurmountable "getting larger every day" and continues so until the chorus of help: "give me a foothold/signpost" and gradually it gets better until it's clear where he's going and sees the mountain and its shadow getting smaller as he moves on. |
