I will use the Junk o' Rock version to make my interpretation. "A cloudy vision, absence of granter I don't care what is wrong or right The earth is bleeding and secreeding madness Petrified, gone dry inside" Maybe these are thoughts of a very chaotic future, but if it's good or bad for him/her, he/she doesn't care. The world is becoming a hell. "The wheels keep turning and the clock is pounding And there's only more and more that I want And through the things you can still feel the sounding Of the maze, of the place where things still matter" In my opinion, the wheels are the ammount of population in the world, or in a specific place. The "more and more" that he/she wants maybe means fun. The last two lines may mean an escape from the big cities to the small/rural towns. "Rock more, roll more Fuck more, Pac-Man is loving it" Maybe he/she wants fun and make love, maybe even a peaceful life. Maybe the "Pac-Man is loving it" part means that is something repetitive but still very fun. "Consumed till you bleed I get down on my knees" The "consumed" part means that you are very automated until you die. Get down on knees may mean that he/she is praying. In honest opinions, this versions makes me interpret that he/she wants to leave the hell that the big cities and corporate crap turned to live a peaceful life in the small towns till the day it's not possible anymore. |

While the song is mainly about the Vietnam War, i have found an alternate - and modern - interpretation of the song, based on the political and social crisis found in Brazil and Europe. "One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small" You can decide between being a fascist (the larger), who wants to get rid of anyone who is not from your "species" or doesn't have a STRONG social/cultural relation with your country, or being a socialist/communist (the smaller), who just think it's all about the land and the people - as long as it's their land and their people. "And the ones that mother gives you, don't do anything at all" This fits more Brazilian people, specially half of the youthhood. You can just ignore what's happening in the world and stay watching crappy soap operas, fighting because of soccer teams, thinking that politics is a waste of time and starving for sex, without knowing there will be consequences in the future. "Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall" In this case, Alice would be an interpretation of "god". "When she's ten feet tall" means that the fascism has god in their side. Considering that most fascists are extremely religious. "And if you go chasing rabbits, and you know you're going to fall Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar has given you the call" This is the part where fascists will provoke immigrants, atheists, muslims, asians, along others, but the terminally ill justice will attempt give them a serious penality, and they will say this was in the name of their leaders and to save the people of their country. "And call Alice, when she was just small" Despite most socialists/communists being atheists, there still is some religious socialists/communists. The smaller Alice is the socialist/communist interpretation of God. They will say that God is in their side. "When the men on the chessboard get up and tell you where to go And you've just had some kind of mushroom, and your mind is moving low" The men in the chessboard are the leaders which represent each wing. The right wing/fascism will tell you to go to in their favor, while the left wing/socialism/communism will tell you to stay with them. Having a mushroom means you want to stay on the less worst side, or escape to another country, the mind moving low means you are trying to escape the country or to a less worst place but you can't. "Go ask Alice, I think she'll know" It means ask God what should you do. But God, just like Alice, can't give you an answer. As Alice is in a book, and almost nobody can see, hear, feel or touch God. --- Up to you decide if god exists or not, altough i believe there isn't ONLY one God in the world/universe, but many of them. "When logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead" Logic and proportion are necessary to live a peaceful life and make the right decisions on the politics and solving social issues, and people just kicked logic and proportion away of their lives. "And the white knight is talking backwards" The white knight would be the very short freedom trying to contain the chaos of totalitarianism but no one understands/cares about freedom (which to them is talking backwards) "And the red queen's off with their(?) heads" The Red Queen would be totalitarianism rising to power and taking away all the liberties of it's country. "Remember what the dormouse said" The Dormouse would be someone who tried to warn everyone this would happen, sooner or later. "Feed your head, feed your head" IT means that you have to educate yourself, be accurate, stay away from totalitarianism, because even if you are the perfect citizen in a totalitarian regime, you will be a loser. |
