@hothothot! i agree it is about sex (possibly sex on drugs too). I have the same 1987 interview where robert says it is about 3 strange sexual experiences. It's really funny that whenever robert says songs are about sex, people can't believe it (could it be because maybe it could mean sex with someone other than his wife? GASP!) but with any other artist it's not a big deal. very strange. there are quite a few songs where he said they are about SEX. |

Correction to my previous comment: I didn't mean to type Robert said the song was about something that happened to him (with Lydia). He never said he was with her. I meant to say that's what I think. Hit submit too quickly! Sorry. |

I love this song. Queen of Siam may be in reference to Lydia Lunch's album of the same name and Robert has said this song is about something that happened to him one night (with Lydia). As usual, Robert didn't give any more details, but it makes me think this song is about her. Robert was hanging around Lydia for a few years in the early 80s. She opened for The Cure in 1981. For the most part, the band had used the film Carnage Visors to open the shows, but there was a leg of that tour where Lydia was invited by Robert to open for them. And then again in 1982, when they toured in support of Pornography. They grew quite close and even kept a little poetry book going back and forth between them for a few years - some entries of their "funeral book" are on the web. He even wrote the words to "Faith" in it to her. There are other entries that I have seen which makes me think their relationship was more than just platonic, but I could be wrong! |

Robert has stated in more than one interview that this did happen. He received letters from an obsessed fan and they finally met and he wasn't how she thought he'd be. Which brings me to another point - I find it quite funny that a lot of women don't think he's ever slept with or had affairs with other women. He's away from home touring for months on end... And in this case, why would he want to meet up with someone obsessed with him? I doubt he wanted a platonic friendship out of it. Robert's even stated as far back as 1985 that his relationship with Mary is "fairly liberal." |
