I think, he really wants to make this relationship work but he's having a hard time not comparing it to his previous lover and getting over her. For example, when he says 'fight my corner', he means he hopes his current lover will understand his defense about being unable to fully let go of his past, and that she'll work with him to move ahead and make what they have work.
