There's no question it's about an underage girl. It's always seemed a little uncomfortable to me that way, but it's so well done that I enjoy it anyway. I assume the "20,000 days younger than me" part is hyperbolic, because that's almost 55 years... Ew. Later of course it says he is ten years older than her, so it must just be an expression that it might as well be 20,000 days since she's underage. For reference, the Standard Creepiness Rule states that you should not date someone under (age/2)+7 (using the age of the older of the two people as the reference). So if she's "sweet sixteen" and "he's ten years older than me", then (26/2)+7=20. She's 20% younger than the minimum age according to The Rule, thus the societal reaction to their relationship. https://xkcd.com/314/ |

@[stpfan22:13646] *Personally* I disagree. There are only a handful of songs they've ever produced that I didn't enjoy. I liked Rock Crown every bit as much as American Standard, and Orange Avenue almost as much. I haven't spent as much time listening to the later ones but I've enjoyed the songs when they've come on streaming services these days. There's no question the style changed over time, but it really works for me. |

| The only insight I can possibly add to what has already been stated here is that the part at the end about "Gas Hed's on the radio" seems to make it certain that he/they consider him/themselves to be either Gas Hed or Gas Heds. It seems likely from the rest of the lyrics, and general tone, but that part seems to me to eliminate any doubt. | |

| @[Sinfjotli:13645] Um, Ed Kowalczyk is extremely deliberate and precise with his lyrics. It ALL has meaning to him. Whether or not he makes a public explanation of some particular song or portion of a song is another matter. And every song is open to personal interpretation. But it isn't just meaningless crap thrown together to sell albums. He takes it very seriously, and almost all of it stems from his study of eastern philosophy and religions. | |
