With many Maynard songs there’s religious implications. Discussing the meaning and lyrics usually turns into a religious debate of some kind. I felt the need to add my two cents as a Christian to provide a view that perhaps Maynard’s mother Judith shared. I’m not trying to sway anyone and their beliefs beit atheist, Buddhist, agnostic, etc, etc. so I would hate for this to turn ugly. In the song, Maynard clearly struggles with why his mother would continue to devote her life to a god that would paralyze her for 27 years. As a Christian, I struggle with this as well. I think most do. Clearly Mr.Keenan does as well; “Why would God do this to one of his children who is devoting their life to Him?”. From my personal views, we’re not on strings. Good and bad happen to everyone regardless of religious views. I believe Jesus himself said that the rain falls on the just and unjust alike. Basically, crap happens. I lost an infant daughter. It didn’t shake my faith. I was upset as well, but then I think about how God must have felt. Here’s one of his children devastated with the loss of a child. I can’t begin to describe the pain my wife and I felt. My two young sons as well. And I know God was hurting for us too. What many Christians fail to remember (myself fully included) is that this life is a blink when you consider the eternal life waiting for us. All the struggles we endure will feel like a bad weekend when we’re called home. God loves us and it’s His love and promise to live eternally in heaven with Him that helps many to keep their faith in times of need. Judith must have felt that as well. I drew comfort knowing that I have a heavenly father who loves me. Just like I love my own children. I can’t always protect them from all the bad things on this planet. All I can do is give them the basic building blocks to be good people, and to help others. And hopefully that’s enough to so that they can have a peaceful and happy life. In many ways, I believe that’s what God has provided to us. He gives us the Tools (pardon the pun) to deal with the crap we have to endure. And to do it with compassion, love and faith. He works through us. I think everyone can have an eternal life. Believers and non-believers. Jesus said He is the way and whomever believes in him will have eternal life. Many Christians take that to believe that if you don’t believe in Christ you can’t go to Heaven. But some scholars have maintained the translation of that statement from Hebrew to English may have been misinterpreted. The Hebrew word for ‘believe’ may not be a literal translation. Instead, some maintain that it means to ‘be like’ or ‘act like’. So if you live like Jesus lived, which is to love, help and avoid judgment of others, you can live in Heaven as well. This surely includes everyone – atheists, agnostics, Muslims, Buddhists,….everyone. I hope I didn’t offend anyone. I’m not trying to push my beliefs on anyone. Just trying to give a perspective from a different angle. Be who you are. Think how you will. Free will is an awesome gift. Come to your own conclusions about life, religion, spirituality, etc. |

@[Beowulf_Xtreme:13610] Agreed. No need to shove an opinion down anyone's throat. Maynard has his beliefs and his mother had others. |
