Coke is only the maguffin. The REAL thrust of the song is the old psychoanalytic concept of the 'negative mother' and Oedipal complex of a man, smothered by the 'mother' archetype, whether it be his actual mum, or the church, or fate, etc., who can't relate to women because none is perfect enough. He can't slay Medusa. He looks for perfection in a string of beauties and parties but can't escape the cheap kitsch icon of the mother and narcissism. Like Hamlet, he waits and wastes time. |

It's worth pointing out that Ferry loves paradoxical language and puns, and the line should be, 'Now I'm blinded I CAN really see, yeah ...'. Not 'can't'. The blind seer, the vision through the chaos, the living. Quite similar to 'New Town' from the 'Bete Noir' album, the need to experience life to see past it. |
