| Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show – In over My Head Lyrics | 9 years ago |

Given that this is Dr Hook, we can safely assume that there is double-entendre and tongue in cheek humour at play. The literal meaning is obviously about a man who is in over his head with a woman. Most likely, she's either his mistress or a prostitute. Perhaps though, he may just be concerned about how intimate or connected he is becoming with this woman, and there's not anything untoward at play. You be the judge. Now, the connotations - hidden meanings - of the song are sexual and salacious and par for the course with Dr Hook. It's established that he is sleeping with a woman at the beginning of the song, so if we use that for context then we can derive further meaning from the rest of the lyrics. 'In over my head' could be reference to the man's... sexual apparatus, and the moans in the background of the chorus support this. 'Comin' and goin'' could be the act of sex and ejaculation, obviously. 'I've never tasted lips any hotter And I'm gettin' deeper with every kiss. I can't help it I want it I love how she loves it' - pretty much speaks for itself, but to spell it out this seems to be a thinly veiled allusion to cunnilingus. 'Slide up the back stairs' is open for debate... And there you have it. |
