To me, this song reads about feeling split in two. The narrator is the "traitor" who is falling victim to depression and dark feelings in private despite wanting to be better for the sake of loved ones in public. Having this darker aspect to who he is obviously straining to his mental well-being and he contemplates killing himself to be free of it (God waiting underneath his bed in a shoe box being his mode of suicide).The narrator likens this "traitor" side of himself to his father, someone with traits or vices he fears he himself had inherited. As he is contemplating killing off these sides to his being, he thrust further into a train of thought associated with his "traitor" side, seeing as how suicide itself is a dark thing to ponder. When he says "I won't feel a thing if you don't" I believe he is speaking to his father, who he feels is responsible passing on to him the ability to have such horrible thoughts, and would be able to relate. When he says that if you feel what I feel, you'll find faith to believe in god he is suggesting that he is experiencing such emotional turmoil that it will scare you into searching for a god. |
