Genesis – Wot Gorilla? Lyrics 4 years ago
Genesis' attempt at jazz/rock fusion after they tried and failed to rehearse Hacektt's "Please Don't Touch". Given that Collins was going great guns with Brand X as a side project I am surprised this doesn't really work.

Genesis – Anything She Does Lyrics 4 years ago
Today we might say this is the birth of an incel. As others say, it's about a man who has an unhealthy obsession with a female model/celebrity.

Genesis – No Son Of Mine Lyrics 4 years ago
At the time of release, Phil (who wrote the lyrics to this one) said that you weren't sure if the son or the mother was being abused, but the dad was a bit of a bastard.

I think it is deliberately left vague, for the listener to interpret. As someone who grew up in a household with a mother who emotionally abused myself and my dad I identify with worrying about "what might happen that night", listening to a parent screaming blue murder, belittling the other parent, threatening to leave etc. But it could equally be about a dad who also abuses the children directly.

Either way a powerful song.

Genesis – Aisle Of Plenty Lyrics 9 years ago
A song about consumerism...about selling out your values...which loosely connects the entire Selling England album.

"Take the Safe Way Home...Thankful for her Fine Fare discount, Tess Co-Operates"....Safeway, Fine Fare, Tesco and the Co-Op all were/are supermarkets in the UK. Although they had been around 20 years, it was the early to mid 70s that saw the British supermarkets take over from the independent butchers and greengrocers, who might well have been selling English ribs of beef of the highest quality....but the supermarket had conveniently packaged beef cheaper.

Genesis – All In A Mouse's Night Lyrics 9 years ago
Tony Banks has said this is one of his least favourite lyrics, especially the bit about the bread bin.

However I do like it...and I have always thought they were probably watching Tom & Jerry when they wrote this. I like how we hear this from several points of view...the cat, the mouse and the couple. Musically it is a bit twee.

Genesis – Inside and Out Lyrics 9 years ago
A lyric that probably would not be written today because nobody would dare!

We hear both sides of the story....the young man who doesn't think he did anything wrong during a sexual encounter with a girl after a party....Clearly the girl reported him for rape or sexual assault and he was found guilty.

His family are told it will be OK, if he toes the line in prison he will be fine when they release him. The girl's family are told something different, that effectively the system never let's someone who commits sexual offenses go truly free.

And after he comes out, he finds that is the case...the shadow of the conviction haunts him for the rest of his life.

It's not made clear whether he is guilty, the song is more about how a serious conviction - especially for sexual assault - can stay with you for decades.

Genesis – No Son Of Mine Lyrics 9 years ago
This was released as the advance single, before the album came out. At the time Phil Collins said of the lyrics, "It's about a young man. You don't really really know what's going on but the father is a bit of a bastard".

I've always felt that this is about someone who left home as a teenager after suffering abuse. It's not clear whether the man of the house was abusing the boy, or the mother...maybe both. The boy escapes to various "hiding places", probably never settling in a home of his own...constantly full of thoughts about his childhood. Eventually he confronts his father intending to "talk it over" but is angrily told "you're no son of mine".

In short, a song about an abusive dad. Possibly deliberately vague, open to interpretation like so many Genesis lyrics.
