George Harrison – Horse to Water Lyrics 4 years ago
Not a lot of interpretation necessary, is there? I would only point out the swipe George and Jools take at the preacher, who's talkin' 'bout Satan, I think he might know him, he acts like he's possessed. No time to speak of god's realization (which rhymes with) fornication. Oh no. Oh no. Oh no.

Love me some George. And glad to know of Jools Holland too!

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 9 years ago
Of course with all great songs, there are both narrow and broad interpretations. What the one means to you is different from how it was created.

So yes, this like many (most? all?) PFloyd songs, is an ode to Syd Barrett. But it isn't about Barrett's heavy drug use, not at all. What happened was that Syd was schizophrenic and decided to leave the band to get treatment, which was at that time some very vicious and counterproductive "care." Electroshock therapy, Thorazine, lucky they didn't talk him into a lobotomy. Watters was against the move. To Watters, Syd's schizophrenic self was his essence, and not at all a pathology. Sure Roger, you can think that because the horrible, commanding voices are in SYD's head, not YOURS. Still, maybe Watters was right. Can't know, can we.

So read these lyrics again, as a plea to Syd to stay and avoid taking a "lead role in a cage" locked with thorazine.

Another example of the same approach to songwriting by Watters is the song "Breathe." Leave, but don't leave me. Look around, choose your own ground.

Lots of Floyd songs including the whole "The Wall" are, at their core, songs to or for or about Syd.
