| Pearl Jam – Better Man Lyrics

I read somewhere that this song was written by Eddy for his mother, who would have been one of those women who lived in fear, in the shadow of a violent man. For me, it is above all an ode to women who are victims and prisoners of violent men, women who have also lost their self-confidence and tell themselves that even if they manage to leave the men who abuse their weaknesses, that they won't find better, won't find "a better man"! They find themselves stuck in a vicious circle and don't dare to leave them, not out of love but out of fear, fear of this physical and psychological violence! The way Eddy Vedder talks about these problems that usually end in drama, his ability to put himself in the skin of these women is extremely moving! |

GoD-Like and LTSlize I want to thank both of you for your well explained interpretations. I'm from Belgium and I understand english but it's sometimes hard to understand the meaning of songs, especially AIC songs! Layne was a very good writer, Jerry too, that's what make their songs more interesting than other bands! I agree with your thoughts but I wanted to ask if It's not a person in particulary he's talking too here: his former girlfriend Demri. He says "Now the soul of body I adore wants to die, you have told me you wouldn't pass age 25 I say stay long enough..."? Demri and Layne broke up because of drugs and Demri was even addicted to heroïne than Layne! And she was still using even after her heart suggery. Don't you think it's about Demri and other people Layne adressed these lines? |

That's the beauty about a sublime instrumental part like this one! We all can interprete it the way we want to and make it "our" song, with our own imagination, our own memories, the images and impressions we create with time...This EP, and the other one, Sap are the proof that AIC much more was than a grunge band or a metal band but one of the best " (hard)rock - folk - blues - jazzy - band - sometimes gothic band" in the rock history with one of bests singer-songwriter. |

This song is one of the best! So much energy in the music and in Layne's voice. Did someone say Dirt was their best or their first really good album? I don't think so, Facelift is the proove they were already the best "grunge " / " hard rock "/ " metal " band from this era! Dirt, AIC, Sap and Jar Of Flies only confirm they were the best rock alternative band and Layne the best vocalist from the 90's! This song is someone suffering, crying, yelling the fear he's feeling to a girl, it also have something to do with growing up in a much too cruel world, the fear and the pain he's feeling, screaming for/at his mom...Beautiful, wonderful Layne, you had a hard time facing all these angry men always hungry, looking for more money and power, you weren't prepared for these "Big guys". Sleep thight, little angel, we're still thinking of you, talking about you, we love you. Rest now, forever in peace! Lucrese. |

This song is one of my favorite FM song's if not one of my favorite songs in rock history! And we're talking about a Fleetwood Mac song because the 5 members participated! John McVie played a bass line over and over again (everytime I hear this song I remember how good these musicians all are). They all loved John's riff so they decided they had to do a song with John's bass line in it, they all collaborated and Stevie had an old song with lyrics that perfectly matched with this song. They didn't really understand the meaning of these lyrics recalled Christine McVie in 1997 in a interview about the album"Rumours"20 years later but they found they went perfect with the music they didn't change a single word! The lyrics reflect lots of love, hate, pain and contradictions. And it isn't a surprise knowing Christine and John, Stevie and Lindsey, Mick and wife were breaking up. And during this painful moments, they had to see each other every single day to make this album. They could'nt go home at night because they were in another city. The two women hired a appartement in the same building and the men slept in the studio. Lots of pain, lots of dranks, lots of drugs and yet they made one of the best albums in the rock history: listen to The Chain, Gold Dust Woman, Go your own way, Dreams, Songbird, Don't Stop, Second Hand News, Landslide, Never Going Back Again,...This is without a doubt the best album they made with Fleetwood Mac(1975), and Tusk! A lot of artists I love (Just to name someone: Layne Staley from Alice In Chains who sadly died in 2002 once told during an interview Rumours from FM was his favorite album). FM is so good, I saw them twice the past 3 years and they still rock on :-)! |

@N0 C0DE 79 Sorry but, this is not about Kurt and/or Nirvana, but about Layne Staley and AIC and about one of the best ( to me the best) EP ever written in the 90's! I don't want to be rude or not polited and you obviously loved a lot Kurt and Nirvana but I noticed a long time ago that most Nirvana fans always have to compare them with other bands like AIC or PJ! They all were talented young musicians and we were teenagers, they gave us courage and a selfesteem we may not have been in the 80's because they were real, they sang about their problems, our problems and it felt so good! I'm listening to Jar Of Flies right now and it's so beautifull, the music, the voices, ...Anyway, I wish you a very nice day. Greets from Belgium. Lucrese. |

@[Tainted703:12672] This song was written in 95 and Demri died in 96 but I think she was already ill (she spent the last 9 months of her life in a hospital). I think you're right, this song is about her too! I also think it has something to do with psychiatry because of the video! |

So much energy, this song is very good, country-rock music (the only one I know in this style) and very good lyrics with lots of humor! Young Layne is still a boy with a long life before him, he stills believes in a happy rock'n roll star and you hear his enthousiasm not only in this song but in "bleed the freak", "I can't have you blues" etc...I'm not ashamed to say I really love this song! Ps: please excuse my english, it isn't my first language, I'm from Belgium... |

@[LTSmissingyou:12361] Congratulation! I hope you're still "clean"! I also love Layne Staley and AIC! I never understand why Nirvana had so much succes, I prefere Alice In Chains and I even use to argue about it with my friends at school in the early '90's :-)! Anyway, I read with lots of attention what you wrote and I really hope you're doing fine! Greets from Belgium! |

This is a wonderful song about loosing all the beauty in life (innocence is stolen, confidence is broken...) when you become awaare of what's our old world about, in other words, when we become aldults! It's also about what we become, the things we do that we didn't ( lying...). Growing up is not always about romance! I think Layne also refered to all the things he had to deal with as an artist, things he probably didn't imagine he would have to do when he started to write songs with the hope of becoming a celebrety! But I'm sure it was very hard for him (and for all young artists who are so enthoussiast in the beginning): the press ( the wrote he had AIDS when he didn't go on stage because of his sikness...). I really love this song, the music and the lyrics! |
