| Steely Dan – Gaucho Lyrics | 9 years ago |

This song is hilarious. That sax lick told me right away that this was some kind of shaggy dog story. There's a couple - can't tell if it's straight or gay - and older and younger - and parent-child type relationship. The younger fouls the nest by picking up some guy who is clearly not part of party, whatever that party is - drugs, entertainment. But some kind of score was set up and this - this gaucho - is about to screw everything up. Plus, this guy is not - not coming back with us. It seems like there is a plausible drug reference in this song, as well as the overt references in Glamour Profession, Time Out of Mind. And that's fine for them if that's what it is. I think the surface story is enough fun. |

| Steely Dan – Things I Miss the Most Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| Sounds like a big divorce. He lost lots of stuff but maybe he still has lots of other stuff. Can't tell. This guy can't separate his feelings from his things. The music says he's sad. I've lost an Eames Chair, just not as I,portent as someone to trust. | |
| Steely Dan – Aja Lyrics | 9 years ago |

I like to start with what isn't mysterious. Aja is a place or a name. Acronym for LSD? Never heard that. Dime dancing was a thing where guys could buy a dance with a girl ai a ballroom. A dime reflects the time and social circle. This sounds like a guy scrapin bottom but seeking something new, exotic, exalted. He could be a drug addict living on Hippy Hill too which is part of his descent. Thing is, picking apart the references without connecting to the bigger picture makes it a parlor game. |
