This song is about 1 of 2 scenarios: 1. Working night shifts which pushes you further into solitude, using drugs to kill time and avoid people outside of brief sexual encounters. You try to convince yourself that you wouldn't need drugs if you had enough money to live a normal lifestyle, but Frank Ocean knows he's being ironic because he's rich now and still at it. 2. A person who is addicted to drugs and becomes antisocial, avoiding his friends, family and even his significant other because he's embarrassed or doesn't want to hear their opinion on it when he doesn't think it's that serious. The night shift in this scenario refers to him having to deal with himself, buying and consuming drugs on a daily basis to keep himself out of his own brain at night. He has genuinely good memories of his upbringing and his friends/family but when he thinks about this, it makes him feel even worse so he just chases one high after the other to stay "asleep" every night. |
