I know I am way after everyone else here. I don't think every verse in this song needs to be taken literally and dissected. To me the over-arching theme is a girl that's using sexuality to her advantage even though she doesn't need to. She could make her way through the world on her own "she never needed anyone to get around the track," but instead she falls back on what she knows "...on her back, she had the knowledge... To get what she wanted." So you have this chick that the boys worship and instead of working for what she wants she takes the "easy" way... I LOVE Belle and Sebastian, and I'm not casting aspersions, but this song is sung from a very misogynistic point of view, to me anyway. |
