Tesla – What You Give Lyrics 2 years ago
I loved this song the very first time I heard it. I read that Jeff Keith wrote it about his dog, after they had passed away, and I can see that. But like any good songwriter, Tom Petty was the same (another favourite of mine!), many listeners can take many different meanings from one song, often depending on their own emotions/feelings at the time they listen. This is about a bond with a wonderful animal, and the love Jeff has/has for them, but that can transpire to the love one can feel for another human too. The emotion is so heartfelt and beautiful, it can still make me cry sometimes.

Tom Petty – A Woman in Love (It's Not Me) Lyrics 8 years ago
@[youtubeJamesSkelleysearch:12183] Perhaps, I know Tom's been no stranger to drugs, even nowadays.

But I think this is more about the woman saying not to fight her leaving him, because 'Anything can happen, anything can end.' I also think the woman has gone to an abusive relationship, and she is also saying 'Don't fight this, don't try to rescue me, I don't need saving.' because she doesn't want to see it for the abusive relationship it is.

' She's a woman in love
And he's gonna break her heart to pieces
But she don't want to know
She's a woman in love, she can't let go '

I think this is very sad, as, with many of Tom's songs, you can her the pure, raw emotion in not just his voice, but his lyrics, and he was obviously deeply in love with this woman, but saw that he had to let her go.

I have read where Tom said that when he was in high school, if he was sweet on a girl, and she didn't return his feelings, he would be heart-broken. I think he's still like that. I think he's a true romantic, and sadly, romantics tend to get their hearts broken many times, and often quite easily.

What ever the true story behind the song, it still sounds as good and relevant today as it did then. That is the talent of Tom Petty :)

Tom Petty – Breakdown Lyrics 8 years ago
@[EATaPEACH:12173] I agree up to a point, although "We've said all there is to say" could also mean, that he's done with just talking, maybe done with the stalling by the woman, and he just wants to make love, all night! :) - I do think this song is more about physical lust than love perhaps, (although they can go together!) and that's coming from me as a romantic :) I think the music, especially at the beginning, is incredibly seductive and sensual, and as you say, Tom's voice when he sings this, is also seductive and sensual. That's one of the benefits when you hear a singer sing his own lyrics. They are written from his heart, from his soul. He 'feels' each and every word, and Tom expresses his feelings/desires beautifully. :) - I certainly have a 'Breakdown' every time I listen to this! :) (sigh!)

Tom Petty – Ankle Deep Lyrics 8 years ago

I found your interpretation very interesting, thank-you. I like the way you separated the different verses. :)

I think Tom includes snippets of himself in many of his songs, (as do many artists!), and I wonder whether this song has more hidden depths than is perhaps at first obvious? If you know some of Tom's background, you can see other things here. Well, I can, but perhaps that's just me! Yes, I know I'm strange! :)

Is Tom the horse? The 'big engine' success and fame? Did Jane Benyo react to that by being perhaps a second 'stolen horse' that 'spooked and tumbled', who was so out of things, she literally 'Just kinda mumbled?'

I sometimes wonder whether Tom may have thought of himself as a 'single father' when he was married to Jane Benyo. I've read some pretty awful things about how she neglected Adria and Kim due to her mental health issues and drink and drug abuse.

Tom has said how he would get home and find Jane passed out in the hallway. :( He must have felt very alone at that time, with the responsibility of his children solely on his shoulders. As you say, ScrumThis, "In the final line we hear the girl express to her father, 'Daddy, you've been a mother to me.' This suggests that the single parent has had to perform both parental roles himself."

I don't think Tom has ever 'washed his hands' of his children, although I know he was very frustrated at one point, feeling as though he had no say in their lives. It would be interesting to know whether Tom ever spanked his children.

He has a good relationship with the two girls now, and I think that is a positive thing :)

Perhaps the washing of hands, actually refers to Jane Benyo? The divorce. Tom put her 'cross his knee', punished her, by finally leaving her and getting the divorce?

I'm probably reading far too much into the song, it's perhaps as simple and straightforward as it first appears, but it's interesting to think about! :) x
