I believe this is a song about falling in love with someone you know/strongly believe won’t love you back. The narrator is afraid that if he tells this person how he feels—how he’s falling in love with her—she’ll walk away. “I can't touch you anymore I can't tell you how I feel, as I fall You would walk” Paints a pretty clear picture. He can’t even touch her, knowing it’ll only make things more difficult. “Heavy hearts do bury words Under promises and "anything you wants," you'll have” He will do anything for her, but with a burdened heart. He’ll give her anything she wants because he loves her, but he can’t admit that that’s the reason why. “Like a body without warmth Feels the blood arrest And blackens from the cold, I'd cave” Without her, he’d cave—he’d shrivel up from the pain of not having her like a body without warmth freezes in the cold. “For kings and queens misunderstand Heaven isn't held - but takes you by the hand, so I've found” Just like the falsehood of the righteous and noble believing that they can take whatever they want and keep it for themselves, the same goes for love. Like heaven, it’s not something you can capture—it has to find you and take you on its own. “Tame your thoughts and let me in Break your callous ways and press me to your skin Save a rose [this next verse was excluded in the posted lyrics for some reason] I'd quell your thoughts and let you in Break your savage ways and press you to my skin Save a rose” He desperately wants her to tear down her emotional barriers and let him in—if he could, he’d do so himself. I’m not positive about the “save a rose” reference, though. Maybe it’s just a desperate request to save something he considers precious and beautiful—don’t let it shrivel and die. “But I can’t touch you anymore I can’t tell you how I feel, as I fall You would walk.” At the end of it all, despite how hopelessly in love he is and how badly he wants her to feel the same, he still can’t tell her. He knows she’ll just walk away and leave him all alone. It’s a beautiful and powerful song that uses simple, yet poetic expressions to convey a sense of hopeless longing. |
