Seems obvious to me that this was an expose piece about the abuse of black slave women. I heard the heroin analogies as a kid but as I grew up and listened to it there is no other meaning. Quite simply a name & shame piece. And brilliantly brave considering the potential for misinterpretation. The Stones at their very best ! |

Love this song. Simple but powerful. Everyone has moments where they feel like their world has fallen apart & the feel like giving up. This song is about getting through that. About telling that person that it will be ok. I particularly love the lyric "your destiny may keep you warm" - Hope & belief in your future. Brilliant song ! |

Here's my take on it ... I think the beginning is that perfect world we all see as a child. Innocence & ignorance is bliss. The thin ice of modern life alludes to the old saying "things were simpler back then". Modern life is more complicated, with so many ways to offend, hurt, be hurt, succeed, fail, etc. Dragging behind you the silent reproach of a million tear-stained eyes: As you go through life you collect baggage. You disappoint people, hurt people. Even the guilt of loved ones you don't think you showed enough love to ... like his dad. The crack in the ice is inevitable. But you don't believe it. That innocence & naivety. Everyone has to learn it the hard way. We all inevitably find these situations that are beyond our control ... and it often hurts & makes you crazy. You end up jaded & fearful. Hard hearted. Fear flowing out behind you is a cool way of expressing how you start to exude this fear. i.e. people can smell it on you. |
