I think you provide a good interpretation for 2016, however, since this song was written many years ago, the interpretation you give is a little gray. The basic meaning of this song is completely about how mankind has disconnected from humanity. The neon God they speak is a representation of the new God much like the Golden calf in biblical times, a false God if you will. Mankind has lost the ability to verbally communicate. "Writing on the subway walls" on tenement halls" this is how people get their information now, not from other men and women. It is so sad that we as humans rely so heavily on technology to communicate now. The disconnection of humans from humanity will be our downfall.
