The meaning of this song is often mistaken, in that, many assume that the song refers to the narrator. In actuality, the song is referring to another - the narrators love interest. This is clear in the use of "You" and "I". In short, this song describes a person who is being strung along by someone who is still caught up in their last relationship! The narrator describes a person who has been hurt in the past, and since, has compensated for that hurt. "Cheated and lied, broken so bad. You made a vow, never get mad." The narrator is in a relationship with this person, and feels as though he is being treated unfairly by him/her due to their past. "You play the game, though, its unfair. They're all the same, who could compare?" He then goes on to describe what it was like to be with this person, "First you lose trust, then you get worried." This describes how he feels he is unable to get close to him/her because of their lack of trust in others. He goes on to describe how his partner (or ex partner) goes out to clubs and bars, gets drunk and compensates for their past hurt. "Night after night, bar after club Dropping like flies, who woke you up? On the front lawn, sprinklers turn on It's not your house, where'd you go wrong?" He then continues to describe his current relationship with this person, in that this person feels guilt for how they treat him. They feel sorry for how they are behaving. "First you get hurt, then you feel sorry" He then describes a metaphor for how this person is behaving - goes on to say that he is the unlucky one in the relationship. He feels as though he has to wait for him/her to come to realize that he is a good person. He/she was his first choice, but the narrator was clearly not their first choice. "Flying like a cannonball, falling to the earth Heavy as a feather when you hit the dirt How am I the lucky one I do not deserve to wait around forever when you were there first" There is a point in the song where the narrator describes what his partner has said to him, or what he wishes to believe - that his partner is merely going through a stage, and eventually they will come out of it. "There comes a time in a short life Turn it around, get a rewrite Call it a dark night of the soul Ticking of clocks, gravity's pull" Finally, the narrator tells us that he does not believe that this person is genuine in their feelings - they still long for their ex, but they also want a relationship with the narrator (burning the candle from both ends). At this point, the narrator seems to be sarcastic (Oh, at least you can pretend) "You're growing silent, the silent treatment It's not inviting now, but don't deny what you meant You get excited, you get excited You got a feeling, oh, at least you can pretend You wanna light it, you wanna light it You wanna light it now, the candle from both ends You get excited, you get excited" The repetitive lyrics show how the two go in circles with this issue in their relationship, and how the narrator feels as though he is stuck. |
