David Bowie – Heroes Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this is one of Bowie's best lyrical stories. To me, it's about two people who want to be together, but can't, or one person who wants to be with another, but it can never be. So he or she fantasizes about this great, heroic life they could have, even if just for one day.

David Bowie – Rock 'n' Roll with Me Lyrics 9 years ago
This song always makes me think of someone I love, and how joyous the moment is when you're with that person, doing something simple like dancing to rock and roll music.

Jethro Tull – Songs From The Wood Lyrics 9 years ago
@[urprobablyright:10673]

I'm not sure Ian would disapprove of using music to make a point, he did that quite a lot. On the Aqualung record, on "Queen and Country" and "Back Door Angels" from War Child, Thick As A Brick and A Passion Play, and "Farm on the Freeway" from Crest of a Knave are examples.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 9 years ago
I've always viewed this song as a kind of journey, a tale of spiritual transcendence. Mostly the last part, the rollicking "And as we wind on down the road" section. I can see it as being a sort of message of maintaing individuality. The piper is some leader, don't be a follower. That kind of thing. Also that the path to heaven (happiness) does not lie in materialism. So for me the song is about a spiritual journey to happiness. I'm sure I could analyze every word and create a really detailed interpretation, but I think this is a good summary.

Pink Floyd – Your Possible Pasts Lyrics 9 years ago
This song calls up feelings of oppression, of the general destructiveness of society on the individual. "I was just a child then, now I'm only a man." You start off beautiful and bright as a child, but the world quickly forces you out of that innocent light. It also makes me think of regrets...the whole idea of "possible pasts", the great "what might have beens". The chorus is pure rejection. The individual is no longer good enough for whoever he's speaking too. Of course this song has a meaning more directly relating to the album, but these are the connotations of the song for me.

Pink Floyd – Not Now John Lyrics 9 years ago
I don't agree with those who say the song doesn't fit on the album. I think it's the best song on the album. It's angry, classic Waters. He's displeased with the way things have become in the world, especially in Britain, and that's what he's expressing here. Instead of living the post-war dream, Britain is saying "fuck all that" and barrelling forward into more and more bullshit. It's a harsh, sharply criticizing song.

Pink Floyd – The Final Cut Lyrics 9 years ago
The whole Final Cut is full of of exceptionally good lyrical material from Waters, and this song contains one of my favorite passages of Waters verse. The "And if I show you my dark side..." verse. I love it because there's so much alienation in the world, so much oppression and lack of compassion. You open up, let someone in, and they betray you or hurt you. Not always, of course, but often. I see this part of the song as an ode to that pain. The whole song really summarizes it, the total pain of loneliness that causes some to arrive at the edge, to become suicidal. Unfortunately, there are some who do have the nerve to make the final cut...

That's a really interesting interpretation! I never thought of it that way. Just goes to show the depth of Ian Anderson's lyrics.

Jethro Tull – Skating Away (On the Thin Ice of a New Day) Lyrics 9 years ago
One of my very favorite Tull songs, I perceive it as a description of the social and existential detachment of modern humans from themselves. Life flashes by, and the limited number of years on Earth is the bane of man's existence. Yet, instead of truly living, we wander through life disoriented, never allowing ourselves to transcend the bullshit and be who we truly are. Beautiful tune.

Jethro Tull – The Third Hoorah Lyrics 9 years ago
It appears to me that this song is about how life can be stressful, but you've got to go out and live it to the fullest anyway, enjoy it, because it's too damn short to waste away. It's a celebration of life.

Jethro Tull – Back Door Angels Lyrics 9 years ago
Such a great example of Ian Anderson's ability to write some seriously intense, thought-provoking lyrics. "Why do the faithful have such a will to believe in something and call it the name they choose, having chosen nothing?" Bold, brilliant, beautiful.

Pink Floyd – Paranoid Eyes Lyrics 9 years ago
This song, like so many others on The Final Cut, is phenomenal, deep, and powerful. I tend to associate it with social anxiety, because that's something I've struggled with, but, more in accordance with the album's themes, it's also a beautiful commentary on returning home from war to find that nothing is the way it was when you left.

Pink Floyd – Your Possible Pasts Lyrics 9 years ago
This song (and this album) is one of Roger Waters's deepest, I think. For me, it calls up feelings of old hope destroyed by the oppressiveness of society. "I was just a child then, now I'm only a man." You start out so bright, but as time goes on, the missed opportunities rack up, the pile of failures grows-whether as a result of your own mistakes and misjudgments, or as a result of being oppressed by "the cold and religious." Incredible track, some of Waters's best writing in my opinion.
