The doom band Pallbearer covered this in their 2010 demo, with the exclusion of the last verse. If you’re into distorted guitars slow rhythms, it might be up you’re alley. I think they did a great job with the cover, as the singer in the cover reminds me of the original vocalist’s voice. The guitars and big drums give it a dark and crushing emotion, and it’s personally my favorite cover I’ve heard so far. |

I think this song is about going through life, and learning a lot. The whole song has a tone of wisdom, and a kind of knowledge about the aspects of life. In the first two verses he talks about how, in the past, he didn't know enough about the world, and/or didn't have any understanding of how things worked. It's like he's saying, "I know a lot of things now that I didn't know then." However, in the final verse, he says that he has never been young, and that he hasn't changed or learned over time. He's acknowledging that he's just as foolish as when he really was young, and still makes the same mistakes. In short, he's saying that, during his existence, he feels like he has grown as a person, only to find that he is still as imperfect as his past self.
Certainly a message I can relate to. I don't listen to a lot of Michael Gira, but this song is absolutely legendary, beautiful and downright poetic. |

I always hear it as "I am a worm before I am a man". The chorus always makes me think that I need to overcome my immaturities and basic impulses (hence creature before I could stand) to gain control over my life. That's just my opinion though. |

I know this song probably has some very personal ties with Cantrell's life, but it reminds me so much of things that have happened to me that I can't help but relate a small bit.
To me, this song can almost be related to any terrible travesty. After all, things like broken relationships, death, disease, and of course, suicide, hurt for a long time. They feel like bad dreams.
This song to me is a sort of theme for the times in life when things really do hurt. Since they so often do, this song is very personal for many. Including myself.

When I first heard this song, I took the lyrics very literally. The first thing that came to mind was a stalker or "peeping tom", hence "I watched you change". Personally, I think it's about a guy who idolizes a girl but she is not nearly as passionate about as the guy because she thinks he's a creep and a weirdo. Because she feels this way, the guy gets indignant and decides to sink to the label he's been given, so he proceeds to stare at and stalk her, watching her change. In the end, however, he realizes what he's done and that it was terribly wrong, and that ends with him wanting to commit (i.e. the part about the gun). Anyways, that's just my two cents. |

I feel like the meaning could go 2 ways, one being a person finds another that greatly reflects him, or gets him, and he's about to lose them. The other one is a person who has a lot of problems, and he feels alone with his problems and looking in the mirror makes him feel sad about what he's become, but happy because he know he'll always have himself. |

I think a child is a metaphor for someone you want to protect, because they help make you a better person. A lot of the lyrics point to this theme, describing how's he's scared of the "rain". The where do we go now part explains how lost he is after discovering that he's lost his "child", which could be a close friend, or significant other. |

This song really speaks to me, as it describes me almost perfectly (I even have blue eyes) to the point it's almost scary. I've always felt like I can connect with people, but they don't really get me, because of an addiction I had early in life, and I told lies to hide it. I made a place in my head (the dreams part of the song) to get away from everyday life and the addiction (dreams aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be). Then when I got to being an adolescent, I spent a lot of time alone in my room (hours only lonely). My love was vengeance in the way that I felt too distant, and I wanted to make up for it. Into the bridge part of the song, I used to get to my addiction easily and I needed to unclench my gist from it. Then in the part about smiling and laughing, I used to try to be funny to strangers, but would look strange and make a fool of myself.
If I swallowed anything evil (the addiction) I would need something to stop me. I tried to surround myself with my only good friends, but they were all in different places (keep me warm let me wear your coat). |

I know the whole mamasan thing but I think this song is actually happy despite the angry tone. I think it's about a person that was held back by their own thoughts. (Once upon a time I could control myself.) Then they realized that there wasn't anything holding them back so they accomplished what they needed to after breaking from their own limits. So I think this song is of celebration after becoming a new more brave person. |

I think that this song is about a guy who is in a relationship. The guy is shy and has a part of himself that he doesn't share with others because he doesn't think they would get his situation/mental state. But above all he wants this girl to know because he wants to be honest but he knows that what might come out may jeopardize the relationship. In short, he's scared of being himself, but he wants to express himself to the person he loves. |
