Don't just take my word for it - data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that Aboriginal adults who were removed as children have much worse outcomes in mental health, employment, alcohol abuse, and incarceration than Aboriginal adults who remained with their families. Added to this is that those who were institutionalised missed out on parenting and consequently many struggle to parent their children well because of this institutionalism and the trauma they suffered. Bill Simon has written a wonderful book 'Back on the Block' about his experiences of removal, his struggles as an adult and how he was to eventually able to overcome them. | |
