| Kings of Convenience – Once Around The Block Lyrics | 9 years ago |

Had no idea this was actually a cover! The original is good but I love this version, and one knows it's a good cover because they've pretty much made their own version of the song - they changed it up really well. It's a really well-written song due to all its subtleties - epitomized by the fact that the line "once around the block" is never actually mentioned, but the listener is instructed to take "a left, a sharp left and another left". So they're once around the block of course! A really intelligent piece of music. |

It's all about how life is full of the unexpected in every sense. Doesn't really need much explaining - it's simply a fantastic song. |

| Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More Lyrics | 9 years ago |

Interestingly, William Shakespeare is known to have used some of Marcus Mumford's lines from this song, including "sigh no more", "one foot in sea, one on shore" and "man is a giddy thing" in his play Much Ado About Nothing. Fascinating to see how Mumford and Sons have inspired others over the centuries. |

Jeff Mangum has notoriously complicated and confusing lyrics which many contributors like to spend a lot of time trying to decipher. I'm not clever enough for that - I guess there's probably a hidden meaning that I'm not getting behind this song as well! Regardless, I love the lyrics because I simply hear somebody marvelling at life itself. I think it's all about the fleeting nature of our existence as human beings, of course Mangum encapsulates a whole lot more than that into the song, but that's the basics of what I hear from travelling In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. My favourite line is: "Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all." I've thought that exact thought SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many times. Haven't we all? |

| The Western States Motel – Powerlines Lyrics | 9 years ago |

I think sometimes songs are best when they are written with a personal meaning, perhaps that not many people will really understand. I think this is one of those songs. That said, from what I can see the writer seems quite unhappy, and missing things the way they were. The first verse describes how we're supposed to be happy with what we have, and so we pretend to be, but really we're not happy at all. The bit about being lost in her eyes comes across as talking about a past relationship where she didn't trust his commitment to her. He asks her if she really thought he'd rather be anywhere else: "When I was lost in your eyes, Was I trying to find A way beyond All the palm tree powerlines?" And yes, it sounds vaguely similar to New Slang. We know already! ;) |

Sometimes certain lyrics don't strike you the first time you listen to them. I listened to this song again a little while later, and was really hit by the opening lyrics: "She'll be gone soon You can have me for yourself She'll be gone soon You can have me for yourself But do give Just give me today Or you will just scare me away" There's something in those lines that perfectly describes the feeling when you know you'll soon lose contact with somebody you've fallen in love with, and only really want them, but are also aware that someone else seems kinda into you. And you don't want that at all. As dants said: "...it looks like the taleteller isn't really interested in the new person that he's talking to, since the second part of the sentence ("you can have me for yourself") appears emotionally detached." It is an absolutely fantastic song. |

| The Avett Brothers – If It's the Beaches Lyrics | 9 years ago |

It's all about when you love somebody so much that you'll do anything to keep them, even if that isn't really a good idea. Pushed to breaking point, he says - and means - that he'll do anything for her, provided she sticks with him. The song gives me a mental picture of somebody trying to sweep the broken pieces of something up and stick everything back together. Success isn't impossible, but it's not all that realistic either. "I will rearrange my plans and change for you." "A guarantee and not a promise that I'll never let your love slip from my hands." "If it's the beaches' sands you want, then you will have them. If it's the mountains' bending rivers, then you will have them." My favourite lines, and those which epitomize the story of the song for me. |

| Alexi Murdoch – Song For You Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
For me, this is a song written for someone really feeling the weight of the world. The writer wants to get close to this person (probably a girl, but not necessarily), but isn't entirely sure how. So, as he says, he writes a song! To be fair, that's what Alexi Murdoch does best. There are two parts of this song that particularly get to me. The first are the choruses, which vividly describe somebody who really struggles to cope with their current situation. This is epitomized by "flying so you won't land" - a relatable position to be in. Everything on the ground seems so messy and difficult that sometimes it seems easier just to stay in the sky a little longer and avoid landing back in the real world. The second part is the closing lyrics: "And all of this life Moves around you For all that you claim You're standing still You are moving too I will move with you." And that's what it means to love somebody. To want to help. To be a friend. Although life seems to be passing them by (whatever situation it is they're in, the song makes me think perhaps depression or something similar), the writer gently reminds them that life goes on, but he'll be there with them every step of the way. An absolute masterpiece. |

| Keane – She Has No Time Lyrics | 9 years ago |

I remember reading that Tim Rice-Oxley wrote this song for Tom to console him about a girl who turned him down. This helps the line "My heart opens up to you when she says she has no time for you now" make more sense to me. It's a beautiful song. It primarily seems to confront an underlying insecurity (perhaps one that Tom had, I know I do!) that we don't matter to somebody as much as they matter to us. I love listening to this song because, in it, I hear Tim say to Tom that he matters immensely to him, regardless of what the girl may think. Although this is disguised beneath the statement that "she can hardly breathe without you", I think they probably both know that she's just not that into him. Tim wants Tom to believe in himself, and I think this song is a hand to help him up. |
