REM spoke about the meaning of the song in an interview with an italian magazine for the flim "man on the moon" while the song does have something to do with kaufman. it really talks about a relationship, that never could work, but the one singing it, equates keeping it going to doing the impossible, he's keeping flowers in full bloom, bending spoons etc.... what he really wants is dancing bears and humming birds, (happiness with this person) "why can't we pantomine? wings on our feet?" he essentially sees this person as "impossible" difficult, he talks about how foolish he was to try to convince her they can be together "i can't believe that i believe that you could see, that theres so many planets in the solar system and noihing up my sleeve" he's saying he couldn't believe how naive he was to try to convince this person he was sincere. the song is about doing whatever you can to keep a doomed relationship going with a person, knowing it cant work, dreaming of how it could be and also accepting the reality... |

the song is about someone who can't "give in" he's a person with a lot of charm, charisma, but he won't stop "fighting", he talks about himself in the 1st verse has being a solider in a place of great injustice, he's not talking literally, he's talking about protecting himself from hurt, from pain, the last sentence "save lay my rifle down" really gets to me, have you ever been too proud to text, call someone after a fight?, put if they called you, you'd walk to the end of the earth? thats what he's saying! to lay his rifle down would be to open himself up to hurt and no protect himself, but also to stop being himself. the next verse could talk about another relationship, or he could still be talking about the same girl, he's saying that his "work" is unparralled, meaning he's able to start a relationship and make you love him, he's built walls and houses but not literal ones in order to protect this relationship, but he can't, his good intentions are all that, and he keeps "fighting" for all his good intentions and trying the "house" collapses and they are free to go, another relationship done with, but he said he's not a builder, meaning he knows he can't "bulild" a relationship, but he dreamt he was an architect, the create of big buildings, ie relationships. but its only a fantasy. he can't do it. the 3rd verse just has him telling you that after all the failures of the past, he's living in another world, he's speaking about being a spaniard in spain, with royality and wooing women without their husbands there, he's saying hes settled for relationships that have no future, he's no architect! he can't build a "house" so he "rents". |
