In an interview SK gave to the BBC about No Cities the interviewer asked specifically how much of the new album was inspired by their real lives, citing the lyrics of Price Tag "scrambled eggs for little legs" as an example. Corin did say that lyric was a direct example of having two small children for whom she does cook scrambled eggs every morning for but that the song is about economic struggle in America and that the character of the song is someone working a minimum wage job and trying to make ends meet. |

Carrie Brownstein said in her book this song was written for the fans about the band's relationship to their listeners. When she was younger Carrie felt she didn't fit in with her family or surroundings and constantly felt a need for more attention and validation. She wrote letters to rock stars but most didn't write back but when she wrote letters to tv soap actors they actually did and would send head shots as well which made her feel validated and alive in the world. For someone struggling to feel noticed the acknowledgement of a celebrity, however insignificant or not, is a huge gratitude. In later years Carrie said she'd felt that same hunger and need in fans to be the person on the other end, to try to help others feel validated without being completely overwhelmed by their sometimes bottomless desire. Carrie Brownstein mentioned this song in her book, "Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl" and stated the lyrics came while she was dating a swimmer, her feelings of peaceful solitude and wholeness while swimming but alienation and disconnection when back on land. It also feels like there's a further meaning that you only truly connect with yourself while in a state of isolation while following your desires. |
