I concur with worksfine. God is wanted by many. People who are righteous, and people who are not so righteous. Ministers, thieves. Judges, lawyer, who swear people in court by placing their hand on the Bible. He even spells it out with for the mission and for the cause. The chorus refers to 7 often. Christians believe 7 is God's perfect number. 777 is the antithesis of 666. God rested on the 7th day, etc. While there is a lot of fear mongering in religion, many Christians believe believe God's love runs much deeper than any human can love. Exactly as worksfine says "I'm walking because my life ain't free" is because Jesus paid the heaviest price for us (love is 7 feet deep). Also, not in the lyrics above, but the second chorus is slightly different from the first. In the first chorus, Cope says "your pain is killing me". I think it's because emotionally Jesus' pain is killing him. He hurts for him. In the second chorus Cope clearly says "your pain ain't killing me" because Jesus' pain gave us eternal life. I know this won't be a popular opinion because it's not cool to be a Christian (in fact worksfine's post was the only post to have a downvote), but it's not beyond Cope to speak about Christianity. He does it quite often. From "Salvation" on his first album, to "Left for Dead" on Every Waking Moment (which is a story that seems really close to the story of Moses). Rainwater LP refers to the Battle of Jericho in reference to a relationship he has. There's also other references to Jesus and the Bible in other songs of his as well. The point I'm trying to make is it's not entirely outside of Cope's content to refer to Jesus' sacrifice at the cross. In all honesty, I love Citizen Cope and really could care less if it's about a girl, cocaine, money, or Jesus. I would listen to this on repeat regardless. I do feel strongly about my interpretation, but understand the beauty of music is how many different ways to interpret pieces of art. |
