| Tom Petty – Flirting With Time Lyrics | 9 years ago |

Tom Petty is a legend. I love his uncomplicated song structures and emotive lyrics. He has always been in my life. Sometimes quiet and unassuming and other times very loud and proud - Like my big brother. For me this song reminds me of the time when my father passed away. This is a personal interpretation of a song that helped me out in a big way at a sad and painful time. My Dad had been ill for some time and had been in and out of hospital for a while. Unable to return home he went to live with my dear sister who cared for him until he finally had to go to a nursing home. We were told that there was no hope and it was just a matter of time. My father was nearing the end and I was driving the 70 odd miles to spend the night with him at the nursing home when I first heard this song off Toms latest - Highway Companion. So while I guess this song is most likely about something else entirely for me its all about my dads passing. 1st verse - on the move without a home. (as explained earlier) 2nd verse This could well be your last stand hold the sunlight in your hand. Spread your fingers feel the sand fall through are all about him (and me) accepting his fate. The family had done all they could and now it was up to him. He was flirting with time and sadly time was catching up with him. The shadowmen represent the medical team and carers in the background and while I knew my Dad was being well cared for the lyric made me wonder if he had cried out and no one came to him. The last verse reflects the helpless way we all felt and not having any answers. My father passed away that night. I have never known the timing of my first listen to a song to have such personal relevance. I know this is a sad interpretation but when ever I hear the song I turn the volume up and think fondly of my dear old Dad. May he rest in Peace always. Thanks Tom. |
