@[ken1025751:9536] I fully agree with this commentator in that, for me at least, the whole point of this song is the feeling that comes in the moment of realization that one is utterly trapped, trapped in a situation of one's own making, despite warnings and one's own deep-down knowledge that things would inevitably come to this. To whom, other than 'Mama' - the one utterly trustworthy source - would one dare turn for confirmation that 'this could Really Be' the End, the ultimate consequence of failure to get it right This Time? The first time I heard this song performed live by Dylan was in a closed rehearsal session with the members of the Grateful Dead, prior to them all going on tour together. The dead played it regularly as part of their own repertoire of songs. Bob was obviously enjoying himself, and they really let themselves go with the spirit of the song. It went on for a good 15 minutes, and experience was truly hair-raising. |
