This has me floored. For years I assumed the person riding the Metro is a woman. Now that I understand it's a man, this song makes more sense! Thanks. I think the confusing line is "I remember hating you for loving me." That's the way I feel when I am trying to leave someone, not the other way around. Because most of the song seems to be about a man who is losing his lover. The wrinkled letter suggests that it's an old letter from his lover, when she still loved him (" I love you always") and "filled my eyes" means tears filled his eyes. Perhaps she was unfaithful. "You were waiting there swimming through apologies" followed by "sorry" in the last verse- he returns to London to see her after finding out she cheated or is leaving him. And even so, he wants her still..."I was searching for the perfect words, I was hoping you might change your mind." Great song and it makes you think! |

| Thomas Dolby – I Love You Goodbye Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| Because I had a lover from The middle of Cajun country, Evangeline Parish, I understand and love this song. The only reason I know what Opelousas is (a town in central LA) is because I asked her once while we were driving from Lafayette to her hometown. She said, its pronounced 'OPP- a loosis.' Not "Oh pa looses" as in the song. But I would never Hold that against Mr. Dolby, because I too have been under a Cajun moon with someone I loved very much, and will never forget it. Thank you for this beautiful prose. | |

| @[treant:9497] Ocean and coasts appear frequently in Adam's lyrics. I think of Long December, "it's been so long since I've seen the ocean... Guess I should." And "if you think you might come to California, I think you should..." Coastal places are symbolic somehow. | |

@[divican:9496] @[divican:9496] interesting interpretation. It's strange how this song gives a creepy feeling, and I think you have to be in that certain mood to understand it. meb. |
