The way I see it is that he thought his relationship was going well with this person, thought that they were happy, when in fact, she was not. Maybe he's been through something like this before, so the news isn't exactly surprising, just... a shame. I feel like the second stanza is expressing how he knows she'll be happier alone and he should let her go but he can't feel anything, he's too numb to do or say anything. He doesn't want to leave and lose her. In the third stanza he seems upset at her, upset that he can't do anything to make her happy. How he feels like at this point she's just kind of using him. Then he admits his feelings, why he's staying with her. He loves her so much he can't leave her. He never wants to leave her. But of course his conflict continues and it's a shame. I'm sure this interpretation is affected by my personal experience. But this is what I feel when I hear the song. |
