This song is about a man's deep, exclusive, and undying love for a woman, who is clearly absent, and secretly hoping that she will hear that he misses her greatly, wants the best for her no matter what happens, and that she will one day wake up and catch the vision of what he thinks is a divine fit and connection between them and come back to him. First of all, the tones of this song, the music and male vocal, is absolutely stunning and divine. The tempo of the piece is both melancholic and passionate, which is heard in the male voice as well. The solo guitar strings in the beginning and mixed in are seductive. He starts off telling his exclusive love interest that he misses being with her, using images of the night, darkness, and feeling lonely while envisioning those times she's touched and held him. For a man to admit to wanting to be held and touched is a huge deal; a very difficult vulnerability rarely shared with just anyone. He goes into just how deep his sense of love for her has become, perhaps never having shared that with her. He's feeling like he's lost his mind, "going crazy... losing sleep...and in way too deep over you." His voice is almost that of someone mourning when doubting that she's gone. Next he wants her to know that she is the only one for him as well he for her with her being the first and the last and that he'll always be with her. As a side note, I find it difficult to stop at each segment without listening to the whole song while writing this analysis. The song is very seductive. As a natural outgrowth of this connection to her, he wants to give anything and everything to her. He wants her to feel free to come back to him and allow him to embrace her and put her head on his shoulders. He cares deeply for her. He tops it all off by telling her collective subconscious self that he is her flame no matter whatever conflict or fear that led her to take off without him in the first place. He wants her to feel safe, even if he, perhaps, hasn't been safe with her at times. The next segment goes back to his rare male vulnerability when he tells her just how scared he is of her, talking about the shadows on the wall and wanting to run to and call her, but being hit by the lightening of her rejection or absence. He reiterates his passion for and fear of her, citing how he feels knocked by this lightening bolt that he feel like he can't stand up lest he "for fallin/ apart". And yet, the flame in his heart, perhaps an idealistic love with the imagery of the "veil across my heart over you,"leads to him believing that they are meant to be together. And that's the question the girl might be asking: Does this guy love me for me or does he like the idea of me, to which she replies... |
