The second verse seems to be about a boy kidnapping and raping a virgin girl. ‘Silent pain’ may be showing that she was in pain but unable to call for help. He may have stalked her before hand, hence the words ‘...creatures lie here, looking through the window,' repeated in the chorus. It appeared that the violated girl had a child due to what had happened to her, and kept him, but every time she looked at him she was reminded of how he came to be and became distant, explaining the first verse, where the boy whispers ‘Love me, love me. That’s all I ask for, love me, love me.’ The mother seems to have regretted keeping her child; “...I’m a glass child, I am Hannah’s (probably the mother) regrets.” In the end of the song, it seems as though the rapist is feeling guilty for what he’s done. I personally assume that he went to prison, and was eventually released. He has been called evil, and a monster; ‘“Monster!” How should I feel?’ The words of others, calling him a monster and criminal, haunt him (because he raped the girl because he loved her; 'their nightmares were his dreams'), hence ‘the words tattooed in his veins,’ and ‘ Turn the sheets down, murder ears with pillow lace!’ possibly referring to him trying to eliminate the memory of the rape from his head, by using words related to a bed (where the rape likely occurred). He ultimately cannot handle his guilt and kills himself by electrocuting himself in his bathtub. ‘There’s bathtubs full of glowflies,’ may refer to the sparks created by this act, and ‘bathe in kerosene,’ may mean that he drank some sort of toxic chemical to make sure he died (or he filled a bathtub with kerosene, got in, and lit it on fire to kill himself instead of using bathtub electrocution, which could also explain the ‘glowflies,’ however this would be a painful death, and I doubt he would have done this, unless he felt so guilty that he thought he deserved a painful death). |
