In my oppinion, the songs isn't another heartbreak song, it is more a heartbreaking song. "And as it gets dark in this house of hallways And no corridor leads to the stairs With still wet black paint on all the windows We got no clocks 'cause time don't care here" For me, it sounds as if he has sunken deep into a dark place, which did not seem dark at first. He keeps searching for a way up, a way out. The black, wet paint could be a describtion of the darkness that he can't escape, and since the paint won't allow any light inside, he don't know what time it is, but he doesn't really care either. For me, this sounds like depression - I should know. "So tell me your name young noble stranger And tell me just what we're doing here Have you painted walls with all the answers Have you hidden doors with all our fears" This young noble stranger could be the strange, tender start of something horrible, also if we're hearing about how he's feeling deep inside, then this noble stranger is the unknown feeling of depression, which never belong anywhere. "What he said is the soul's rock hard but the heart's trapped underneath And the weight of it all gets enough just to crush the best out of you and me But I swear that there's someone who cares here enough to set us free And if the world don't turn just enough to bring her honest Then I guess we're better off forgotten" The stranger told him, that eventhough he may come off as hard, then his heart is trapped underneath. The weight of depression and social anxiety is so heavy, and no one can carry it for long. Depression tells us, that we're never good enugh, that no one could ever love us, and he then tells us, that there's someone who cares, and that they will set us free from depression and other metal illnesses. But if world don't t see this as a bigger issue (depression), just enough to make those with mental illnesses, to get them to open up about it, then they'd feel like they're better off forgotten. "The walls stay too thin in this house of hallways They let through the echoes and the stares And they'll bleed bright red with scribbled riddles Scratched out of their panels by angered air" Since the walls are thin, the walls could be glass, or something we can look through. This makes it sound like he feels as if everyone is staring straight at him, and even though he screams, it is but echoes that no one decides to hear/listen to. This gives him the feeling of being alone and that makes him angry and sad all at once. To get these mixed up feelings away, he drags a blade across "his panels" meaning arms/wrists and legs. When people look at them, they can't understand the riddle of WHY he'd do it. "'Cause God knows I've made all my own choices And if I drown alone it's 'cause I choose To spend my time drinking in the stairwells When we've both got way too much to prove" He talks about God and choises, who knows what he did - hence the self-harming. He/God know, that he breaks down, drowning inside himself, whenever he's alone. He drinks his sorrow away - also here's he drowning. And by both, he means God and himself. God has to prove, that he can take care of the whom he created, and the depressed has to prove, that he can stay alive, though it may be hard. He then repeats the chorus, which I already have told you about. Anyways, this is how I see the song. It IS a very deep song, which I surely do love quite a lot. |
