Robyn Hitchcock – Balloon Man Lyrics 5 years ago
I always assumed this song was about condoms and AIDS.

Steely Dan – Kings Lyrics 5 years ago
The lyrics describe King Richard I and King John, English monarchs in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. But the song isn’t about them really, it’s about how the people suffer no matter who the king is. And 800 years later there is a President John and then a President Richard and it’s still the same story, people are hungry and bored and singing about Kings who don’t do anything for them.

Not the deepest lyrics in the Steely Dan canon, but they are clever and the music kicks ass.

Beck – Dark Star Lyrics 6 years ago
This is Beck’s tribute to the Grateful Dead. Dark Star is a classic Dead song, and Beck created a cosmic homage.

The Dead’s lyrics are:

Mirror shatters in formless reflections of matter
Glass hand dissolving in ice, petal flowers revolving
Lady in velvet recedes in the nights of good-bye
Shall we go, you and I while we can
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?

I think the point is to take acid, listen to great music and reflect. It takes genius to fully appreciate genius and Beck certainly does.

The Raspberries – I Wanna Be With You Lyrics 8 years ago
"Close you eyes and be still."

The guy is a rapist. He wants her to stop squirming.

Seriously, this is pretty offensive. It's a great pop tune with terrible lyrics.

Toni Basil – Mickey Lyrics 9 years ago
This is song is a rare top 40 pop song where a woman offer's a man anal sex in an effort to win him.

Mickey's a "pretty" guy and he's probably gay (guys like you"). She wants him because he's beautiful, but although she's throwing herself at him, Mickey's just not interested.

So she tells him to give it to her "anyway you can." She's even willing to "take it like a man."

Anal sex was illegal in about 30 states when this song came out.

R.E.M. – Stand Lyrics 9 years ago
This is a typical REM song about privilege. The northern hemisphere of the world is much, much more affluent than the south. The western world is more developed than the east. In fact, when an eastern nation becomes developed they are said to have become "westernized."

The point of the song, however, isn't just that some people are better off than others. It's about how people born to affluent societies take their privilege for granted. REM is asking their listeners to appreciate why they have what they have, and to do something about it.

The irony is that despite this high mindedness, Michael Stipe was recently identified by a waitress at Babbo as a terrible tipper.

Howard Jones – New Song Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is about Communism. He's asking people to be open minded, consider both sides, and throw off their chains. This is exactly what Karl Marx said. In case there is any doubt, the video takes place in a factory and features Jones exhorting his fellow workers. It's on Jones' album Human's Lib.

New Song is a brilliant example of a veiled meaning. It's a lovely poppy melody that had most people subconsciously repeating Communist ideology.
