Chuck Berry – Roll Over Beethoven Lyrics 7 years ago
@[Comrade_Liar:17640] I have to say that I disagree with you in your interpretation of this song. Chuck Berry is not saying that classical music is dead; he is announcing his entry into the music world. Telling Beethoven to "Roll over and tell Tchaikovsky the news", he is announcing that he is here, and he's got talent.
The version that is done with ELO re-enforces this concept, as nobody blended classical music and classic rock better than ELO did.

Supertramp – School Lyrics 7 years ago
@[TonyM101:16346] No, this song is WAY too creepy for you to have been wrong. This song obviously has a double meaning, as most songs do in this particular album. The common belief is that each song represents a stage in a main character's (Rudy's) life, beginning with childhood. But each song also carries it's own unique meaning. Really brilliant on the part of Supertramp.
I do think this song can represent a stalker, following a child and narrating his life to create a "harrowing" atmosphere as you described. Though I don't think it involved abduction, it definitely has a stalker quality to it.
Of course there are others who will assert that the narrator is not a creepy stalker, but in fact it is Rudy's other personality, and that the entire album carries themes of Schizophrenia and insanity. Take your pick, in my opinion all the possible themes are and can be true; for me it just depends on what mood I'm in.

Average lyrics, much-lower-than-mediocre singing... makes for a typical pop song. Time to head back to the classics section!

I love the imagery of "tears on your shoulder". The one phrase represents both looking back into the past and mourning for it without explicitly saying either of those things.

Dream Academy – Life In A Northern Town Lyrics 8 years ago
Although I know that this song is really about either the loss of innocence in a northern town in the late 1900's or an artist named Nick Drake, this song has always held a very different meaning to me. The last verse especially,
"The evening had turned to rain
Watch the water roll down the drain,
As we followed him down
To the station
And though he never would wave goodbye,
You could see it written in his eyes
As the train pulled out of sight
Bye-bye"
Reminds me of how hard it was when my parents moved me below the Mason line when I was only in 1st grade. I like to imagine it was raining when the last boxes were packed and I had to say goodbye to my schoolmates. Though I don't completely remember everything that went on (I was so young), the song always brings a tear to my eye and reminds me that this is not my home.

Genesis – Supper's Ready Lyrics 8 years ago
@[Rhayader:10316] I feel the same way! I'm a teenager and I feel like I missed out on all the best concerts- I would do anything to go back in time and see Elton John's "Live in Australia" concert. All my friends are completely enamored by the pop culture and pop music; it's rare that I find someone my age that likes that kind of stuff.

Electric Light Orchestra – 10538 Overture Lyrics 8 years ago
This is a beautiful, haunting song about a man who has committed murder, told from the perspective of his friend who obviously had not idea he was capable of that kind of a crime.
Though to me "10538" has always reminded me in a way of "Les Miserables"- the play where the main character (a criminal) is hunted by an unrelenting police officer who refuses to call him by his name- and calls him his prison number. There's probably no connection, but it did ring a bell.

Couldn't have said it better. The way they say "never mind", almost in a nervous, dismissive type of way. It seems that by the end of the song Mister Blue is giving way to Mister night, but you can always remember the good times.

Billy Joel – Leningrad Lyrics 8 years ago
This one almost brings me to tears every time. How can a simple key change be so moving? Gordon Lightfoot's "Summer Side of Life" uses the same key- change technique to illustrate a contrast (but instead of contrasting two countries he contrasts the life of several characters before and after the war), another one of my favorites. If you like this one you should check it out.

Billy Joel – Scenes From An Italian Restaurant Lyrics 8 years ago
@[Gervin:9622]
Sorry, but last time I checked people don't take drugs at nice Italian restaurants. Alcokell is right- the bottle of reds and bottle of whites is a reference to making a selection of wine off of a wine list. The line "It all depends upon your appetite" supports this, as wine is often paired with your meal.

Billy Joel – Say Goodbye To Hollywood Lyrics 8 years ago
What an amazing song. I can identify with the concept of living somewhere where all the people around me are fake, and all my relationships are shallow... "So many faces in and out of my life..."
The best part of this song has to be "Say a word out of line and you'll find that the friends you have are gone... forever." It speaks the truth to the typical PC American society where everyone is offended by everything and people are afraid to truly speak their mind. But I can see this being specifically prevalent in Hollywood.
The characters who he brings into the story (Bobby and Johnny) with their shallow relationships (Bobby only cares about being seen in his "rental car", and Johnny has ruffled too many feathers) really bring home the message of this song.

What a fascinating interpretation. I had never understood verse three, but this seems to make sense. I do think that there is more to this song, though; there are themes about War and the scarring it leaves on people's souls.

Ironic. Did you know that that's what people used to say... "Sweet 16 and never been kissed." Yes, there was a time where young kids didn't go around like idiots kissing each other. Whether you realize it or not you're lucky- once you find that one and you can know you didn't waste your first kiss on some stupid middle school crush... Just know that you will find the right one, and though it may seem hard now you are actually better off for it. (By the way, I'm a teenager too)

The Police – Message In A Bottle Lyrics 8 years ago
I can totally relate to this song... but that's what the song is about in the first place, isn't it? I think most people can, but my present circumstances make my loneliness more apparent than it has been in years. Every day I walk around in my school, sometimes humming this song to myself, sometimes not, but all the same feeling like I am trapped on an island. And island I have made for myself that I am not entirely unhappy with. Sting writes about feeling lonely and isolated, and it is apparent that he is not happy with his situation based on the SOS he sends out. I, however, feel much different about my situation. I think the world assumes that if someone does not have a circle of friends, then they are miserable and unhappy, and someone needs to take them "under their wing". Maybe I don't want to be rescued. True, many have made the point that I was never happier than I was when I had a friend, but now that I have lost them, I am not sure what I am going through was worth all the good times. I don't know if anyone can relate- Sting seems to be looking for a relationship of some kind (not necessarily romantic in nature). Anyway, that's what I took from the song, and I think it's a message that a lot of people need to hear. You are not alone.

About the 100,000,000- I don't think he meant this literally, or practically as you commented. The use of such an astronomical number illustrates the large amount of people that feel the same way- isolated from the world. To me this number represents a hope- if there are really as many people out there that are like me I'm bound to meet one someday, right?

An interesting take, but in my opinion not entirely true, or realistic. But I guess that's what music is about- ambiguity allows people to make their own interpretation.
