Maxïmo Park – Books from Boxes Lyrics 9 years ago
I agree that this is a song about the ending of an affair. The girl is married or has just got married so she is passing him up (breaking the affair off) so as not to break a promise (wedding vows). The loose reference to something old something new something borrowed something blue also indicates marriage. The relationship is a physical one but she may have opted for a safer bet which seems a "thin" excuse to our chap. The unpacking of boxes indicates either her moving into the new marital home or changing her mind not to leave her husband. The reference to writing to each other is not literal, I think it just signifies they will be reduced to long distance friends, perhaps metaphorical rather than geographical, or both. Great song!
