John Prine – Angel From Montgomery Lyrics 8 years ago
I think that the focus here is about the (american) dream, a fantasy which is portrayed trough a subjective point of view, it questions the reality from a very conservative approach, contradicting the basic values, where "the good ol' days, when times were bad" is something that can be combined, as saying that people tend to think that the dreams of childhood ("named after my mother") could "hold on" in the present, or even holding the thought of that it could save them.
I don't see the song as a praise to modernity nor do I see it as a praise to "the old days". I think it's a song of broken thoughts and expectations from a man/woman who (naively) trusted the world to supply the fortunes for her/himself without taking control of own, and a realisation of it. We are living in the future, and we are helpless of carving our own destiny, based on dreams told by our mothers and fathers; we are rootless.
