this is a song about atheism and death the lake in the song represents life.. we all are "drifting towards the drain at the bottom of the lake" and we have no control over this fact this section is a commentary on our shallowness and material needs during our life and the realization that material things are truly meaningless: "I could hear your sinking heart As you closed your eyes to speak Of your mother's wedding dress And the clothes you used to seek" the next section is about the futility of great accomplishments.. great job, you're a submariner, soon you'll be lost in time like everyone else, and your stories will grow old "Submariners stopping by To dissolve their paper gold Soon they'll join our wave ballet And their stories will grow old" This section is about how obsessed we are with trivial things in life... material things, etc. So obsessed that we feel like these things give our life meaning. But alas, they do not. As we spend our lives working constantly and obsessed with material posessions, we are neither truly awake nor asleep as we drift towards death. "Too obsessed to fall asleep Yet we fail to stay awake While we drift toward the drain At the bottom of the lake" the final part is about theists who claim to be righteous who in fact know in their hearts the true reality, but will never admit it or show any signs of believing this way, "you know it won't show in your eyes." "Yet heaven don't need you You won't have to wear your disguise Wherever it leads you You know it won't show in your eyes" thanks |
