| Hozier – Work Song Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| The brilliance of this song comes from the way the story is told. The song is truly a "work song" and the music supports that. The humming and the use of percussion give the song a very traditional feel. The song is about a lover whom we learn about as Hozier tells his workmates about her. "Boys working on empty is that the kind of way to face the burning heat?" sets the scene as a group of men performing hard labor in harsh conditions like heat and hunger. Hozier then goes on to say the way he copes with this is to "think about [his] baby" and that comforts him. He absolutely loves this woman as told throught the line "so full of love." He references a cherry tree which is a common symbol for all the goodness of life, so when he says he never want anything from the cherry tree he is saying he is completely content with his life. The chorus tells us he wants to be with her until the end of his life and then some. He then goes on to tell the "boys" about how "when [she] found [him]" he was a drunk sinner and how she took care of him and never asked about the "wrong [he] did." In the third verse, he talks about how being with her is surreal. Her love is so precious to him he feels "free" and nothing is more important as heard through "heaven and hell [are] words to me." The song is a narrative and love story told through a subplot, Hozier's labor, which is never explained. The song is a love story sung through a different take. It is refreshing and like all Hozier songs poetic. | |
