@[kevin10219:8892] I just realized that the songwriter originally wrote a ballad. The first line was supposed to be "come on skinny love what happened here?", and it was switched by the later line "just last the year". That's because it becomes too obvious. By switching the 2 lines, the songwriter creates an allegory or metaphor rather than just a straightforward ballad. Smart move. |

I think it's a mama saying to her son, "my my my" , let's get rid of that blood, fix up your bruises that Dad gave you, and learn to put this behind you. You were brave to stand up for me, and you need to cut the ropes and let me fall. But she can't get herself to say it.
She told him to be patient, kind, etc. She's in a codependent, classically dysfunctional relationship.
She remembers him as a suckling baby, but the relationship with his father is slowly roasting on the spit, the sullen load is full of sadness.
When he does put it in his rear view mirror in anger, she asks "who will love you" and who will fall far behind? She'll bear the brunt of the violence now that he's gone, She doesn't appreciate that he thinks his love was wasted on her. |
