This is my favorite Mountain Goats song. For me it's not a specific song about those people, but a universal song about the fleetingness of life and love. "Threescore and ten" is a human lifespan, and it's not long. Like a drug trip, life is wonderful and then it fades and your body breaks down. So go for it, be sexy and take risks while you're young. "Turn the tires toward the street, and stay sweet" is probably the best line ever. |

As other comments have said, this is clearly about one man in three stages of life. The first puzzle is, first, why is he a disgrace? The second puzzle is, what does this have to do with "we will rock you"? Who is rocking whom exactly? I think it's not about failure, but about how to live life. "You're a big disgrace" reminds us to be humble. And "We will rock you" means keep that attitude. |

I don't think the meaning has anything to do with the actual person Wendell Gee. For me it's a beautiful and happy song about someone who chooses not to have a normal life, but to be a dreamer and a mystic. Also, I think the line is "whistle as the wind blows, to the lee," which is the word for the direction the wind blows. |

The key to this song is that there are two voices. The five verses that start with "Señor" are the servant talking, and the other two are the master. They have a different meter and Dylan sings with a darker voice. The servant lives in the physical world. He asks practical questions, and talks about his senses, what he sees and smells. Meanwhile, the master raves about a world of myth and memory. As others have pointed out, this song is basically dark Don Quixote. The master, insane, leads the servant into danger, while the servant tries to survive in a middle ground between insanity and reality. And this whole dynamic is a metaphor for "Yankee power", a whole society where the higher classes are out of touch and the lower classes have to follow them. |

This is a concise and powerful breakup song. "Don't forget to kiss me if you're really going to leave." If she loved him, he wouldn't have to remind her. "Couldn't you take the second bus home? Couldn't you just take me with you?" He struggles to accept that this is not going to happen. "If I put my hands to your stomach, or put my lips to your hand" She's not touching him -- he's touching her, looking for something that he will not find. "Take me home, take me home, take me home" Again, a desperate plea for emotional union, and then resignation: "Keep your eyes on the road" She's taking the bus, so this is no longer about her trip home tonight, but her life without him. "I'm convinced that you're from mars" And a final acknowledgment of her alienness and inaccessibility. |
