I love this song. Apparently Prince wrote this song after seeing a meme with Prince and Apollonia on a Purple Rain picture with them together on his purple motorcycle (with the words This could be us).
The song also appears to be a telling of the romance between the Kid and Apollonia in the movie, in my opinion. |

I see it as finding something to help you run away from the bad things in life. With the imagery, imo, its drugs in this case. I could be wrong though. |

The 17 the song is referencing is the 17 ways Morris is seducing the woman he's with. This composition by Prince was originally titled "Proposition 17" in it's early stages (although it is said that the song is the original but re-titled).
Some of the lines/lyrics from this song was used in the movie Purple Rain. In earlier scripts (when the movie was called Dreams), almost every line in this song was used.
