Röyksopp – Tricky Tricky Lyrics 9 years ago
I find this song psychedelic, lunatic and feverish, full of some panic and fears. The singing girl seems very young, in parts also even childish, when she sings "It's a tricky tricky" it sounds like she talking to a baby child, showing some tricks with toys for example, but it seems most of the time she is talking to herself, so it might be that she just talking to herself like to a child, because she still feels naive to this world.
The key of whole song is I think a Smart Phone which young people use so much and it is their closest object in everyday life: a source of entartainment, news and social activities. Line: "Put it in your pocket and pick it up" seems pretty obvious to me - to pick up a phone, also "You are the flower in glittering gold. Sleeping in the palm, the palm of my hand" seems like talking in metaphore about a phone. And finally a phone which people like to show off to others, "We're here to entertain, show them what you've got"
But then I return to the first verse and I found it could be related to television, because in the second verse she sings "It's a tricky tricky THIS LITTLE ONE too" related to a phone as I am guessing. She is singing feverishly, like being watching for too long TV channels and then the line: "6 afraid of 7 cause 7-8-9" seems like digits on remote of TV, a naive child can tell that 6 is afraid of 7 because they are not in the same row, so 6 don't want to stand next to 7 :) but the main reason of it is because 7-8-9 must stand in the same line. She is running the channels "up and down" but in fact she is like "staring at the wall" sitting in front of TV.
I thought about puzzeling line " if it is a lunatic we'll name it after you" and I thought it may be related to popular Smart Phones from Lumia series?
The most problematic line for me to understand is: "They show you who to follow, it looks like a man" I though about new Android system implemented in Smart Phones at that time, where a small robot was an brand icon and she feels afraid of this, allieneted of non-human figure.
But of course this song is so intriguing when you wouldn't wonder what the real subject is. Generally I place her in a problematic and chaotic times of today where there are so many different news and information we are confronted with and especially young person cannot handle it. The line: "If I was created equal is this what I get? A bunch of stories to interpret". Also there is sound effect of robotic voice when the second verse has ended, as I understand the second problem after information is technology which surround us, some people may feel alienated loosing contact with other people, having some tech tools to occupie themselves with.
