@[jen476mn:8595] 1. History's a letter made of scarlet- his is a reference to the term in literature ("Scarlet Letter"). Someone with a scarlet letter means someone who committed aldutery or cheated. So basically, the history of their relationship isn't totally pure. 2. I believe this line is his way of saying he prefers to surrender (it's inferred to be out of love based on the rest of the song), which explains why she looks better "calling" or "claiming" victory. Essentially a humble submission in the name of love. 3. This line seems less ambiguous as it basically is a poetic way of saying he realized once he "lost" her, that the misery he felt in the relationship couldn't compare with the misery of it ending. In other worss, the whatever pain he feels with her is incomparable to the pain or misery he feels without her. 4. This line simply follows up the third by saying that although breaking up may look like relief, it's simply a selfish desire for pleasure. He's essentially acknowledging that he recognizes the fallacy within "the grass is always greener on the other side." 5. This one to me is the toughest to understand, but I think he's talking about the price of pleasure being more than the cost of the relationship. This just reiterates that he feels strongly that love is far greater than pleasure, despite the cost of pain- and of course that in the end pleasure will end up costing more because it leavs you without the benefits of love. These are obviously just my interpretations, I could totally be wrong. All the same, I hope it helped!!! |
