| I think this song is really displaying the major theme of acceptance and moving on. The central conflict regarding two individuals who used to belong in each other's lives are now strangers and one of them refuses to let go of the past and the memories. The lyric, "I am the last thing you remember" is concerning the reality that one has chosen to move on and let go of anything that used to be, while the other (male) is stuck in one state of mind. His refusal to accept his present, in fact enhances his need to return. His lack of acceptance towards moving past memories, leaves him to feel empty and lonely in December. December, a cold and almost a "lonely" monotone month represents the several representations that it can be. December although cold and almost depressing, does in fact symbolize traditions (holidays) and the symbolic value of family. The speaker has lost something and yearns for the past to return, where can he can feel whole. Yet, he wishes his ex lover the best and knows that things must be that way. | |
