| I wanted to throw another viewpoint out there. I think this song can also be about a long lost love/soulmate. Lisa is going through various scenarios - almost as if she knew the person before, but time has changed them. It's a song about forgiveness. Whatever happened in the past is being thrown out and they are meeting each other again, almost as if it's the first time. | |

In the beginning the ex-girlfriend is reflecting on her past relationship. She’s trying so hard to get rid of the pain by one night stands and mindless flirting to prove to herself that she is worthy of love. Unfortunately, this makes her feel like trash (waste) and she continues to think about the ex-boyfriend that cheated on her. She’s confused and the memories are haunting her while she knows she should let it go and give a new fling a chance. Fight for a new opportunity to love and be loved, but she’s not ready. Then it switches to the ex-boyfriend. He’s reflecting on the affair and the guilt he felt during and after the act. He knows now that he loved her more than anything, but the temptations were too hard to resist that night and he gave in. He goes as far as calling himself waste since this was a one-time occurrence and it ruined everything. He knows it was wrong and he’s lost in what to say to make things right. “Give my gun away when it’s loaded” is talking about the temptations that went too far and he didn’t have control of himself. He’s trying to justify what happened over and over almost as if he’s trying to make it right. But at the end of the day he ruined the relationship with the person he loved and cared about the most. Both partners are left broken trying to put the pieces back together in their life by moving on. |
