| Hybrid – Disappear Here Lyrics | 10 years ago |

In short? It’s about a couple engaging in BDSM scenes together. The key clue for me, really, was 'apply the perfect pressure/to your sweet subordinate'. The average layperson doesn’t use ‘subordinate’ to refer to their partners/lovers/whomever. It’s a term generally found in the BDSM community. ‘Apply the perfect pressure’ seems to be a referral to erotic asphyxiation aka breathplay, and there’s an abundance of other evidence in the lyrics to support a BDSM interpretation. I’ll try to group things a bit to make sense. ‘fly like a bird’ ‘I’ll blow away if I breath out’ – In BDSM you will often find references to something called ‘submissive drop’. Basically, some people’s brains are able to shift gears and go into an altered state of consciousness – they’re essentially getting high off of their own endorphins, and it’s often described as feeling like one is flying/weightless/going to float away. This doesn’t happen for everyone; even those who are prone to ‘feel good falling’ need certain conditions to trigger it. And once you’re in that headspace, you can loose control of your emotions, ie ‘you cry like a baby’. ‘I’ll shoot you down’ – A dominant’s role in a scene is to monitor the submissive and make sure things aren’t going too far for any of the participants. You don’t want someone going beyond the euphoria of sub drop into actual shock, ie ‘save me from sleeping now’, so ‘gently you’re winding me down’. ‘wait I’m in the wrong house/wrong room/in someone else’s shoes’ – When in sub drop, a person’s ego (sense of self) tends to vanish. When you don’t recognize yourself, you might also loose recognition of your surroundings and what’s going on. You literally ‘Disappear Here’. ‘I want to turn back/shut down’ – On the verge of drop, a submissive may become anxious, combative, want to leave, or give up the scene altogether. Basically it’s the fight-or-flight response giving one last kick before the endorphin rush takes over. ‘I have been your guilty pleasure/I’ve been your lack of restraint’ – A dominant gets more than a power trip over their sub. They get the chance to let go of society’s normal expectations and indulge in their own ‘guilty pleasures’ with a ‘lack of restraint’. |
