The song's title makes reference to the figure of Eurydice,who was either a nymph, or the daughter of Apollo, and married Orpheus in either interpretation. However, on their wedding day, Eurydice was bitten by a viper and died instantly. Orpheus journeyed to the underworld to retrieve her, and made a deal with Hades that Eurydice could return with him as long as he walked in front of her and didn't look back until they reached the surface again. The myth ends tragically when Orpheus', believing the entire way that Hades has betrayed him and Eurydice is no longer behind him, crosses the threshold out of the underworld only to look back too soon, seeing Eurydice fade away from him as she had not yet crossed over yet. Orpheus would inevitably reunite with Eurydice after his own death at the hands of the Maenads, but singularly, the story is one of loss. In context, the song is about grief, being confronted with the memories of the people you've lost, and the way that grief is fresh again when you come across some memento or location that makes the person feel real in a way that they haven't since their death. |
