The Moody Blues – Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon) Lyrics 2 years ago
@[Jeanne1110:46264] I agree with you. This is a song about taking one's leave from this world. Sure, one can make a case for it being merely a drug song, but the tone, sadness, the longing and regret mean there is more than that going on.

Talk Talk – It's My Life Lyrics 5 years ago
Cannot imagine this song has to do with pets. Animals don't think it's funny -- actually, Hollis probably means "ironic" in that first line -- to be in a relationship with an owner. Puppy/kitty love isn't full of the longing or angst I'm hearing here. That's one hint. The urgency in Hollis's voice suggests the song is about a complicated human romance, made so by ambivalence and unrequitedness -- how much the other party "commits" is a big issue as it is repeated.
The chorus "It's my life" switches the gears back to protect the singer's own ego. It steps back almost defiantly from the precipice of losing oneself in a relationship in order to defend against the pain of being used ("I never know if I was sometimes played upon") and not getting enough back.
Although my interpretation and that of others might nail the meaning, it hardly matters. This song is pure poetry, with its necessary ambiguity. There is something in it for just about everybody who has stubbed his toe on the shoals of romance. A terrific piece of writing and supremely sung. No one in the '80s wrote a better song.

Dire Straits – Your Latest Trick Lyrics 10 years ago
The protagonist is so jaded and in an alcoholic stupor that even a prostitute looks good until he realizes that she isn't. She's taken something from him -- his money, more important his fantasy that the experience as a trick can be more than it really is, and he's left with regret. He's only "the latest trick."
These lines resonate:
"And we're standing outside of these wonderlands
Looking so bereaved and so bereft
Like a bowery bum when he finally understands
The bottle's empty and there's nothing left"

What a terrific song out of many by the writer.

Spandau Ballet – True Lyrics 10 years ago
Agree with those who say this song is about love -- likely failed, unrequited love; likely more than one. Yes, there is the whiff of drugs, but not what the song is ABOUT. Not just the words stress this, but the music is romantic and full of longing by the singer for something he hasn't managed to get, something that is "always slipping through his fingers," despite the thrill. Ain't that the truth he wants us to know about. These are perhaps the most important lines:
"Always in time, but never in line for dreams
Head over heels when toe to toe
This is the sound of my soul,"
Love brings longing, anticipation, but also anxiety -- that's where the pill comes in. He needs something to ease pain.
Love this song.
